Hi, and welcome to Vegan Galley; thanks for visiting!
This is me, Gabrielle; I'm a yogini. I'm also a teacher of yoga but much more a constant student.
Let's get this straight from the start...I’m not claiming to be
any sort of expert vegan! My yoga practice brought me to veganism in January 2010. If you're
interested you can read a more detailed story here.
There are many reasons to eat a vegan diet and if you're reading this you may already know some of the benefits. In yoga philosophy, the first principle of the first limb of yoga is
Ahimsa- which means "non-violence" and extends to all beings. By observing Ahimsa a considerable amount of compassion is developed in the heart which leads to a calm mind that is able to rest in a meditative state. In the tradition and practice of yoga that I have been largely trained and am committed to, this is the reason for a vegan diet- compassion for animals(period.)
There are many other important considerations in relation to our health and the environment that make eating a vegan diet worthwhile. Through research it is my understanding that land, air, and water pollution (in the US) caused by factory farming is higher than
any other single industry- that’s amazing. From a health stance meat eating diets have been linked to certain bone diseases, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and others. From medical research I understand that this is largely due to the levels of proteins that are consumed and how our bodies metabolism these proteins and the acids and the bacteria associated with them. But you can check this stuff out for yourself. I’m not going to tell anyone not to eat meat. I was blind to this information years ago myself and would not have changed my diet based on someone writing a couple sentences or lecturing me. It’s our responsibility as humans to educate ourselves and make conscious decisions when it comes to our health and well-being.
Thanks for reading, and say hi if you see me at a yoga class or a vegan restaurant (it's not likely that you'll see me someplace else!)
